Hey Ski Sisters Racing!
I hope everyone is full on into summer and has managed to get outside and enjoy nature! It has come time for my blog on what I know now that I wish I knew then. I definitely thought about this one a lot, as there are so many things I have learned through ski racing. It is a great teacher and make sure that you are trying to learn from all your experiences everyday. I decided to put my lesson into a short poem. Hope you all enjoy it!
What I Have Learned
By: Shona Rubens
May 2012
There once was a time
Not so long ago
I was only fourteen
And just rarin’ to go
I thought I knew all,
I thought I knew best
The one thing I wanted
Was to beat all the rest.
Second was bad,
While third a disaster
All I could think of
Was how to go faster!
Each race that I won
And each medal I wore,
Just wasn’t enough
Left me wanting one more.
Now what’s wrong with that?
Isn’t it just what you need
To be good at a sport
That’s determined by speed?
Yes! That IS what you need,
In a sport such as this
But there is one crucial thing
That is commonly missed
It took time to learn this
And if I could go back,
I’d give fourteen year old me
A stern-firm handed smack
Yes skiiing’s a sport
About giving your all
But when I look back
The “winning” part was quite small.
I think of the people
And the friends I have made
While the wins and the losses
Are beginning to fade.
I think of the laughs
And the places I’ve been
Not the podiums I’ve stood on,
But all the times in between
The stories I’ve shared
The work ethic I’ve earned
The good and the bad
Of the lessons I’ve learned
In a sport with one winner
It may be hard to believe
That being on top
Is not the only thing to achieve.
A gold medal wont change you
You’re already great
Please love what you do
When you blast out that gate.
So thrive in the journey,
Enjoy the small things
And never lose track
Of the simple joys skiing brings
